Your firm keeps privileged communications and client trust records in Plainmatter, so read what we do today before you move your files.

We describe each control in plain terms and say where we still have gaps.

Review what we do today

Keep each firm's data separate: We tag every record with your firm's ID and filter every query by it. Plainmatter checks that you belong to the firm before every read or write.
Encrypt traffic in transit: We serve Plainmatter only over HTTPS, so traffic between your browser and our servers is encrypted.
Store data with managed providers: We keep your database on managed Postgres and your documents in managed object storage. Both providers encrypt data at rest and take automatic backups.
Control access by role: Give each person the owner, attorney or staff role. Only an owner can turn on AI features for the firm.
Review the activity log: Plainmatter records who created, changed, sent or reversed matters, time entries, invoices and trust transactions, and when.
Protect sign-in: Sign-in runs on WorkOS, so Plainmatter never sees or stores your password. Turn on two-factor sign-in, or sign in with Microsoft or Google.
Keep AI off until you choose it: Plainmatter sends no firm data to an AI provider until an owner turns AI features on in settings.
Export your data at any time: A firm owner can download every record as CSV, with your documents, whenever you want and for 90 days after you cancel. Plainmatter logs each export.

SOC 2: We do not hold a SOC 2 report yet. We will publish the date of our first audit here when we schedule it.
Single sign-on with your own identity provider: SAML single sign-on is not set up for firms yet. Ask us if your firm needs it.
