Move your firm from Clio or MyCase to Plainmatter

Start from the CSV exports you can download from Clio or MyCase today, plus a trust ledger report for each client.

Import contacts, matters and time, enter each client's trust balance as a dated opening deposit, then reconcile once against the same bank statement.

Finish with matching client ledgers and a trust account that balances on day one.

Pick a cutover date before you export

Choose the date of your last trust reconciliation in the old system, usually the end of a bank statement month.

Export everything as of that date, and enter new work in Plainmatter from the next day on.

Follow these steps

  1. Export your data from Clio

Export your contacts, matters and time entries from Clio to CSV, one file for each.

Run a trust ledger report for each client as of your cutover date and save it as a PDF. Keep your last Clio reconciliation report with it.

  2. Export your data from MyCase

Export your contacts, cases and time entries to CSV from the reports or data export area of MyCase settings.

Save a trust ledger report for each client as of your cutover date, and keep your last MyCase reconciliation report.

  3. Import the CSV files into Plainmatter

In Plainmatter, open the import screen and upload the contacts file first, then matters, then time entries.

Match each column to a Plainmatter field, for example Display Name to client name and Matter Number to matter number. Check the preview, then import.

Import in that order so each matter finds its client and each time entry finds its matter.

  4. Enter trust balances as dated opening deposits

For each client with money in trust, record one deposit on the right matter for that client's balance, dated your cutover date. Use a memo like “Opening balance from Clio ledger as of September 30, 2026”.

Enter one deposit per client and matter, never one lump sum for the whole account. Plainmatter checks every later payment against that client's ledger, so each ledger needs its own opening balance.

  5. Reconcile once against the cutover statement

Run a three-way reconciliation in Plainmatter using the bank statement for your cutover date. The trust journal and the sum of client ledgers should both equal the total of your opening deposits.

If checks or deposits from the old system were still uncleared on that statement, the bank figure differs by exactly those items. Note them on the reconciliation and confirm they clear on the next statement.
